About Us
Shand Helen and Bill Shand bought the Empire Lodge in August 2004 and almost immediately brought Pauline Clark on board to assist with running the operation. They moved to the Wairarapa from Wellington in 2001 when Bill was appointed Secretary/Manager of the Masterton Club, a position he has since resigned from to devote more time to the accommodation business. Bill and Helen’s daughter, Rachael, is another important link with part time assistance particularly with reception duties. Their plans for the Empire are to provide clean, comfortable and affordable accommodation for both backpacker & flashpacker holiday makers in an affordable, central, comfortable environment.
